Moritz Saphir, a German writer and translator, was born in Bochum on 5 October 1867. He studied medicine at the University of Munich, where he became interested in psychiatry. In 1898 he opened a private practice in Bochum and became a psychiatrist at the Wahnfried Asylum for Mental Diseases. In 1909 he became a professor of psychiatry at the University of Bonn
In 1933, after his book "Der Sozialismus und die Zukunft" (The Socialism and the Future), was banned by the Nazis, he emigrated to Switzerland. He continued to write and publish books on social problems, mainly against communism. In 1950 he moved to England, where he died on 12 February 1953.
